Dial-up instructions for XP

  1. Click Start, Control Panel, Network and Internet Connections.
  2. Click Network Connection, and then click Next.
  3. Click Create a new connection, and then click Next.
  4. Follow the prompts in the New Connection wizard.
  5. Click on Connect to the network at my workplace, and then click Next.
  6. Click on Dial-up connection, and then click Next.
  7. Enter Connection Name, (Ex. Ferrum College) , and then click Next, and then click Next.
  8. Enter Phone Number to Dial, (540-365-6700), and then click Next.
  9. Connection Availability specify whether you want this connection to be available for anyone's use, meaning for any user on this computer, or for your use only, meaning only for the user who is now logged on, and then click Next.
  10. Specify whether you want a shortcut to the connection on your desktop.
  11. Click Finish


Network Connection Setup

  1. Right Click on your Network Connection icon (for Dial-up use the Dial up Connection icon that you have created).
  2. Click on Properties.
  3. Click on the Network tab.
  4. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
  5. Click on Properties.
  6. Select Obtain IP address automatically.
  7. Select Obtain DNS Server address automatically.
  8. Click Apply.
  9. Click Ok.

Using Dial-Up Connections

  1. Click Start, click Connect To, and the click the connection that you want to use.
  2. In the User Name box, type your user name.
  3. In the Password box, type your password.
  4. Choose one of the following options:
  1. Click Dial.

*The network connection settings are also necessary for computers that students bring from home to use in the dorm room. These settings can be accessed by right-clicking on the "My Network Places" icon and then following the instructions from step 2.

If you brought the recommended Dell Latitude D620 or Apple, your laptop should work right out-of-the-box.
Otherwise:
