Dial-up instructions for XP
- Click Start,
Control Panel, Network and Internet Connections.
- Click Network Connection,
and then click Next.
- Click Create a new connection,
and then click Next.
- Follow the prompts in
the New Connection wizard.
- Click on Connect to
the network at my workplace, and then click Next.
- Click on Dial-up connection,
and then click Next.
- Enter Connection Name,
(Ex. Ferrum College) , and then click Next,
and then click Next.
- Enter Phone Number to
Dial, (540-365-6700), and then click Next.
- Connection Availability specify whether you want this
connection to be available for anyone's use, meaning for any user on this
computer,
or for your use only, meaning only for the user who is now logged on, and
then click Next.
- Specify whether you
want a shortcut to the connection on your desktop.
- Click Finish

Network Connection Setup
- Right Click on your
Network Connection icon (for Dial-up use the
Dial up Connection icon that
you have created).
- Click on Properties.
- Click on the
Network tab.
- Select Internet
Protocol (TCP/IP)
- Click on Properties.
- Select
Obtain IP
address automatically.
- Select
Obtain DNS
Server
address automatically.
- Click
Apply.
- Click
Ok.
Using
Dial-Up Connections
- Click Start, click
Connect To, and the click the connection that you want to use.
- In the User Name box,
type your user name.
- In the Password box,
type your password.
- Choose one of the following
options:
- To save the user name
and password so that you will not have to type them in the future, select
the Save this user name and password for the following
users check box.
- If you want only the
current user to have access to the saved user name and password, select
the Me only check box.
- If you want all users
to have access to the user name and password, select the Anyone who uses
this computer check box.
- Click Dial.
*The network connection
settings are also necessary for computers that students bring from home to use
in the dorm room. These settings can be accessed by right-clicking on the "My
Network Places" icon and then following the instructions
from step 2.

Map Network Drive
- Right click on My Network
Place or Network Neighborhood depending upon whether you have Windows XP.
Windows 2000 or Windows 1998 operating system. Select the option to MAP
NETWORK DRIVE a default drive letter to be assigned.
- In the Folder’s
box enter two (2) backward slashes (\\)
before the name of the server or computer, and then enter the folder name
that holds the data. Separate the computer or server name and folder name
with a backward slash (\), and then click on finish. The
folder must be a shared folder with the proper permissions before access is
granted.
Example: \\ferrumserver\Eudora
(server or computer)\(folder to be accessed).
- Also, using the Browse
button you can navigate the network to locate the server or computer where
the shared folder is stored. Locate the server or computer, then click on
the (+) to expand the list.
- Follow these steps
to use the browse method:
- Click on Browse
- Select Ferrum.edu
in the Microsoft Windows Network list.
- Click on ferrumserver
(server) in the shared network folder list.
- Select the desired
folder , and then click on ok.
- Log on information
may be changed by, clicking onto the Connect
using a different user name.
Creating
a Shared Folder
- Right click on START,
select Explorer from the submenu.
- Select the Local Disk
(C) or (D) to locate the folder.
- Right click on the folder,
then select Sharing from the
submenu.
- On the Sharing tab,
select Share this folder.
- In the Share name box
verify that the correct folder to be shared appears, click on the
Permissions button to give access to the folder.
- On the Permissions window,
click on the ADD button.
- Browse the Select
User, Computer, or Groups window to locate the person for whom access needs to be granted,
then click ADD, and Ok.
- Grant user Full Control,
Change, or Read Only permission, and then click apply, and okay.
- Click on the (X)
in the upper right corner of the screen to exit the browser.
Checking
your Laptop Network Settings
If you
brought the recommended Dell Latitude D620 or Apple, your laptop should work
right out-of-the-box.
Otherwise:
- Click
START

Click
Control Panel
-
Double-Click Network Settings
-
Right-Click on the Connection Icon(s)
there may be two
(one wired
and one wireless so they may have to do from here down, twice)

Left-Click Properties
-
Double-Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

Select:
-
Click
APPLY
-
Click
OK
-
(repeat for
second connection Icon if necessary)

If made
made changes – reboot the laptop
